We all know moving house can be an extremely stressful event so, it’s no surprise if our desire to live an environmentally conscious lifestyle may not be a top priority on moving day. However, there are some things you can do ahead of time to, not only reduce the stress of moving but at the same time do your part to protect the environment. Here are a few suggestions: Sorting through belongings we no longer use is a good idea whether we are moving house or not. One way to do this is to separate items into piles, have one pile for items you wish to keep, one pile for items you want to donate and another pile for a yard sale, etc. It is a good idea to start this process well ahead of the move which will enable you to recycle your unwanted belongings instead of throwing them away, and only keep the items you want to take with you to your new home. This will also make life easier when it comes to unpacking them. There are certain household items that, if thrown into the garbage, have a very negative environmental impact. These items include chemicals, paint cans, used batteries, light bulbs, and electronic equipment. By sorting through these items well ahead of the move, you will have the time to dispose of them in the correct manner. If you are not sure what to do with them, give your local environmental agency a call and they will be able to advise you. Yes, moving day can be very stressful but by taking the time to sort through your belongings ahead of time, you will reduce the stress and do your part to protect the environment. |
