Many times when inspecting a building we will find a deck, balcony, framed floor, or even a roof that is deficient because of the framing and deck spans. It is something that becomes a little tense sometimes though, because whoever built it or had it built will say "it has worked fine, there is nothing wrong with it". But there is an issue with that thinking. The biggest issue with that thinking is not considering the variables. Let's say you built a roof system and it worked for years. Great, right? But now one year we get a very heavy snow load and the framing begins to fail. What was the issue? Not considering the variables. PSF (pounds per square feet) is something that needs to be a major part of any construction project. It needs to be asked :what is the most amount of weight that COULD sit on this structure?" So to avoid costly mistakes, what can be done? Before venturing into any deck/roof/framing venture, be sure to calculate your spans and framing size, as well as your wood type. It sounds complicated, but it's not. There are some easy to use online calculators out there, like this one. Have questions? Contact us! |
