Watch Out For Dishonest Tradespeople

Although it may not feel like it, spring is just around the corner and with that comes getting much needed maintenance done on our homes.  If you will be looking for someone to do the work for you, how can you be sure to get someone honest who will not try to rip you off? 

Here are a few pointers:
 

• If you will be calling around for estimates, try to get a quote before giving your address out.  Very often a different price will be quoted for exactly the same job depending on your location.  Someone living in a wealthier area may be quoted a higher price for example.

 

• Sadly, much of the time con men prey on those who are vulnerable such as the elderly.  Have this in mind, particularly if a tradesman either calls you on the phone or arrives at your door trying to get you to have work done.  Ask them for specific details such as their address and credentials and be cautious of those who are reluctant to give them to you.  A scam artist doesn’t like giving out much information about themselves.  Also, make sure you check out their credentials before hiring them.

 

• When hiring a contractor, make sure they are licensed and insured for the job you want done.  Get a fixed price for the work before the job starts, and have it is all down in a written contract.   In this way you are covering yourself against those expensive “added extras”.  

 

• While a small deposit will probably be required, be careful not to pay for the whole job upfront, or even putting down a large deposit.
